feeddigest issues

598...don't worry about feed digest...do it Monday/Tuesday...I want to see you get it done, but the blog posts are more important to me

What's the problem? I've got no idea...as web based tools sometimes these things work very well...sometimes not so much

Twitter Buddies...onto More RSS...

Just blogging out a little hello as I listen to an awesome Moby mix on Pandora. Don't know why, but I think Moby is my "Working on the 'puter" artist of choice...

Hello to my Twitter buddies...hope you all have checked out Twitbin and/or are Tweeting from IM/Phone to check out some of the awesome options you have.

In this next unit we move from "passively" using RSS to subscribe to the content of others, to using the rss feeds that we create (if you blog or tweet you're creating feeds) and the feeds of others in new and "unique" ways. This week we'll be doing lots of "re-purposing" and using content created in/by one source for use by another source/location. Additionally, we'll take a look at ways to see if people are actually using our content.

With tools like Twitter, I hope you can already see that it's no fun to play alone and that this Social Software stuff is just that...Social. Whether it's your friends, your customers/patrons, etc. "working" together for fun OR business, though potentially time intensive, is a great way to create/strengthen relationships.

Enjoy RSS as Producer....

Blogging (isn't over) has just begun...onto RSS

First, good work on the blogging section of class, I've read just about every post and I can see that almost all of you are following me on Twitter (I'm following you as well :-)

If you don't know what RSS is, you're about to get a pretty good lesson over the next 2 weeks. I've giving RSS two full weeks as it's important to get the concept, it has great implications for information management, AND because we can really use it for cool things later.

From this point on I will pretty much never look at your blogs...I'll be using Bloglines, an rss aggregator, to read your posts (it's actually how I read all your posts this week). With that said, I still encourage you to "play" with your blogs. Images, widgets, skins, etc. can all add to the "personal" side of your blog site.

One of the things that we've been doing over the first few weeks of class is to set up a lot of communication channels...IM, Blogs, Microblogs and now RSS are all ways that we're going to be able to communicate with each other...do you best to think of these tools for their "interactive" strength.

The most important thing that I took from the Brown and Duguid reading was the strength of the social network in the workplace. I remember the wonderful "teams" that I use to work with in the library, I especially loved it when I was "teamed" with someone on the reference desk who has the exact opposite skills that I did. We were able to learn a lot from each other and really come up with creative approaches to difficult questions.

To me, the "social network" is one of the biggest pieces of all these tools. Social Networking goes way beyond MySpace, Facebook, etc., the connections created in threaded discussions, in communities of bloggers, in IM'ing colleagues who are not near you all work to create a "network".

Through this class, each of us becomes "better" because of the work of all of us...example...there's no way we could cover the entirety of the blog software world in one class, but because of the work of everyone in the class, we should have a pretty good picture of some of the most important points...even more of this to come...

IM "done"...on to Blogging

Hello all,

Just wanted to say "nice job" on all the project work in the IM section of class. I hope you all feel that you have a little more experience and perspective with IM and IM in the Library setting.

One thing about IM that I know was probably a bit "painful" to a lot of you is the idea of a "synchronous" communication tool, especially as I have a few of you in "other" time zones. You'll be happy to know that IM is pretty much the only synchronous tool that we'll use in class. (Don't forget as well that you can IM someone and they "should" get your message the next time they log in). We'll still be depending on each other in future classes, but you should be able to do most of your work in your own time frame.

I also want to acknowledge the "joy" of editing in the wiki. Wiki editing (all services I've used) is a bit like editing in Word. Once you conform to the "rules" of the system it all works great, but you have to figure out what those rules are. One rule I'll share with you is that most wiki software doesn't seem to like copy/paste from Word...you can do it, but expect some weird formatting issues. My advice if you don't want to type directly in the wiki would be to use Notepad or TextEdit, then copy/paste and format in the Wiki...still not perfect, but better.

Hope you're all enjoying the class and learning some new skills and new context, if you have any questions feel free to email or message me.

meebo buddies

As I haven't been getting tons of buddy requests from your meebo accounts, I went in today, logged into my meebo account and made buddies of all of you.

What this means:
- The next time you log into your meebo account (not your yahoo, aol, google, etc. via meebo, but meebo itself (the log-in on the far right of the screen), you may seen a buddy request window. If so, please approve and add. If not, please make sure that you have librarysteve with the little meebo icon in your buddy list...if not just add me as a buddy (but make sure to use the dropdown menu and pick meebo)

Why the heck am I making you do this? Well mostly so it will as easy as possible for everyone to see everyone else. I plan on being on meebo quite a bit this semester and will be treating it as one of my primary help areas (note, if you send me email in the future, I might IM my response)

If you're already addicted to you IM client and don't want to switch, you don't have to. Remember that when I'm logged into my meebo account I'm logged into all my accounts, but to have the best access to everyone, I'd recommend hanging out in meebo a bit. (ah the joy of tabbed browsing :-)

Between meebo and twitter, we should have fairly good contact with each other when we need it.

If you haven any questions just let me know, the old Web1.0 email is ok for now, but IM would be preferable :-)

Listen while you work...

As I sit here working on class I just thought I'd share two sites that I really enjoy listening to while I'm working.

1. last.fm - enter an artist (or tag for a genre) in their search box and they'll play you artists related to what you entered

2. pandora.com - here you can also enter an artist/songs etc. pandora's methodology is even more "cool" as they tend to go a bit deeper into analyzing the song

Both sites are great and free to use...with an account on either (no obligation), you can do even more.
